International Dimension of Higher Education in Georgia

(ინტერნაციონალიზაცია და მულტიკულტურული პროექტები საგანმანათლებლო სივრცეში)

Introduction and aim: Internationalization of universities in Georgia is becoming almost obligatory – higher education institutions try to attract international students, participate in exchange programmes and collaborate with partners from other countries, although often without any clear strategy. Increasing competitiveness locally and regionally, achieving financial sustainability and also “ticking the box” in the authorization documents are most common reasons for internationalization of higher education in Georgia.

But does it really increases attractiveness of higher education institutions? Are the universities using internationalization as an instrument for quality enhancement? Are we really international and if not, do we need to be? These questions shall be answered not only by universities but by the society at whole. And for the country in transition, as Georgia, enhancing international dimension of higher education has not only academic meaning – internationalization affects political, economical, cultural aspects, involves security issues and could be considered as a very powerful factor for country development.
