Nursing Education in Georgia

(პროფესიული საგანმანათლებლო პროგრამების განხორციელება – პრობლემები და პერსპექტივები)


Introduction and aim: The role of nurses/midwives in Georgia has been dramatically changed according to fundamental changes in healthcare system, as well as complexity of health problems. Nowadays different types of challenges exist regarding nurses/midwives professional preparation.

Research methodology: Despite of the reforms taking place during last decade - theoretical and practical skills of nurses in Georgia have not been corresponding to current standards, and the number of nurses/midwives is still deficient in throughout Georgia.

Results and implications: Evaluation of clinical skills of 1200 nurses was performed in the center of clinical skills and simulation of Tbilisi State Medical University. Nurses were chosen from different Regions of Georgia with different length of service. OSCE - Objective Structured clinical exam format was used for evaluation process. Deficiency of basic clinical skills was revealed in this population of nurses: catheterization of peripheral veins - 32 points out of maximal 56, using and setting up IV infusion pump – 32 points out of maximal 42; Bladder catheterization – 27 points out of maximal 42; using nasogastric tube – 23 points out of 48).

Conclusion: The results of the research indicate to the great importance of fundamental changes in the process of nursing education.
