“Where” and at “What” Level Do the Graduates of Medical Program Gain Valuable Skills: Study on the Opinion of David Tvildiani Medical University Students

(თანამედროვე გამოწვევები სამედიცინო განათლებაში)

Introduction and aim: In quality self-evaluation of program the most important part has/must have main “users” of program – students; thus, its (program) quality improvement is impossible without their involvement in process, without studying their opinion. Moreover, students themselves are sure that they are responsible for quality of medical education of them and future generations (IFMSA–Global Policy in Medcial Education). In the same time, in Georgia practice of students inquiry is associated with assessment of particular teacher (content of questionnaire, as well as, results of inquire are less relevant to context and not useful for analysis and making conclusions, in our opinion), that somehow “splits” academic society (teacher and student) and is not intended for improvement of education (program) quality. There may be numerous reasons for this but for Georgia the most important is a lack of “readiness” of both abovementioned members of academic society in medical education issues; deep understanding of interrelationship and interdependence of various aspects of program and its quality, “correct” definition of assessment issues and lack of experience in choosing valid instruments. In this purpose (program evaluation) quality assurance service of David Tvildiani Medical University focuses more on evaluation of reasons, processes and resutls and their interrelationship; ex: on educational environment (teacher is considered as well) and not only separate subject; in the framework of module development of subject teaching form/format, literature, etc. including teachers (their teaching skills). By above mentioned attitude study of students’ opinion was conducted in DTMU about assessment of achieving study results in the part of skills and the place for gaining these skills (training).

Research methodology: The first (piloting) inquire was conducted in 2014-2015 academic year, V and VI year 31 students answered the questionnaire; in 2015-2016 academic year V and VI year 47 students and V-VI semester 34 students. The questionnaire contained 129 questions divided in 19 blocks; 5 levels were suggested for evaluation. Data were analyzed by SPSS and Student`s t-test applied; data were distributed by categories and mean score and mode for each category determined; data were analyzed similarly for each question.

Results and implications: The results showed in which categories and skills the students need support, in the framework of which services trainings must be enhanced.

Conclusion: Received Results and their analysis are corresponding for planning MD program development.
