Case Studies in Medical Genetics

(თანამედროვე გამოწვევები სამედიცინო განათლებაში)

Introduction and aim: The study of human genetics plays a role in the diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring of treatment involving conditions seen not only by medical geneticists and genetic counselors, but also by pediatricians, obstetricians/gynecologists, perinatologists, hematologists, endocrinologists, pathologists, urologists and family practice physicians. In addition, cytogenetic testing is often an issue for hospital laboratory personnel and managed care organization. Genetics is fundamental to the basic sciences of preclinical medical education and has important applications to clinical medicine, public health and medical research. The interest around this science is increasing day by day. On the same times there are increasing the numbers of medical and biologist students, which are interesting to get good knowledge in medical genetics.

Research methodology: It is very important how to teach this subject. We are using Clinical cases in medical genetics to demonstrate and reinforce general principles of disease inheritance, pathogenesis, diagnosis, management, and counseling. Case studies introduces a series of short clinically oriented descriptions of a family and the reasons why they sought genetic counseling or testing.

Results and implications: It will increase the motivation of studies of medical genetics.

Conclusion: Above mentioned method helps us to enhance further the teaching value of the medical genetics.

Keywords: case studies, medical genetics, diagnosis, prognosis, monitoring of treatment, biology
