Geo-economics as an Alternative Multidisciplinary Direction for the Study of Economics

(გლობალური საკითხები და თანამედროვე გამოწვევები განათლებაში)

Introduction and aim: The act of teaching is essentially a constant processing of options. At every point in each lecture a lecturer should have a number of options available. In order to become a better teacher it seems important to be aware of as many options as possible. We should learn how to teach in more effective ways.

Geo-economics is an alternative multidisciplinary direction for the study of economics. It will introduce students to the strategic entities, such as nations and multinational enterprises, which constantly face global competitive issues.

Research methodology: Objectives will be met by the following teaching methods:

1. Discussion/Debates; group work (Practical lessons);

2. Homework Assignments (problem-based and task-based teaching).

Results and implications: This course explores the basic analytical principles of Geo-economics.. It is designed to help students develop an understanding of basic Geo-economics maxims. At the end, students will be able to apply these principles to understand real economic phenomena as well as interpret economic news in mass media. Students will identify what the role of the government is in the economic organization. They will become familiarized with economic concepts like Nareland, Heartland, Sealand and others.

The ultimate result should be to develop the student’s skills of analytical reasoning. Even if the student does not pursue economics or a career in business, these skills are valuable in other pursuits and everyday life. Analytical skills will be honed by the development of theoretical models and concepts, reference to statistical information, and the applications of models to real world events.

Conclusion: As I have always planned to spend some time abroad during my studies, I am very happy to use the opportunities given to us by the European Commission. I chose the Erasmus program, because I am particularly interested in spending some time at European university. I think this is unique opportunity to combine my university activities with first-hand experience of economic life and policy in European country.
