Definiteness/Indefiniteness in the languages of different Systems

Introduction and aim: The main goal of this article is to point out similarties and differences between Georgian and English languages in respect of expressing definiteness / indefiniteness.

1. Define the category of definiteness/indefiniteness in source languages (English, Georgian), Work out their functional-semantic typology.

2. Define peculiarities of functioning of markers of this category in both languages considering the pecularities of English and Georgian communicative situations.

Research methodology: We apply to contrastive and descriptive methods for the study of the phenomena of definiteness and indefiniteness.

Results and implications: Practical value of the result of the research lies in the fact that it can be used at higher educational Institutions for courses of contrastive linguistics;

It will help language learners to improve their skills in English and to be able to translate from English into Georgian and from Georgian into English.

Conclusion: In spite of the fact that English and Georgian are languages of different systems they have similar meanings of definiteness and indefiniteness. Though the origin of definite article "the" comes from demonstrative pronoun "that" in English and indefiniteness (a/an) is introduced by a numeral "one"(old form "an") nowadays English language has got established markers of abovementioned category while Georgian has varied pronouns to express it.
