The Rule of Scholarship Provision to Enhance Students’ Motivation

(სასწავლო პროცესისა და კვლევების ინტეგრაცია)

Introduction and aim: Scholarship provision is an effective way of encouraging students' academic achievement and increasing their motivation. The research carried out by the authors is the initiative of the Quality Assurance Office of Akaki Tsereteli State University to examine how the system of scholarship provision and distribution contributes to the enhancement of students' motivation.

Research methodology: The authors have studied and analyzed the dynamics of the provision of university and state scholarships at ATSU in 2012-2017 and made a comparison with the dynamics of the provision of university and state scholarships for first-year students during the same years; the current rule of scholarship provision at the university has also been studied; The comparative analysis has been carried out to study the rules of scholarship provision existing in various universities.

Results and implications: According to statistics, over the years the percentage of scholarship provision is sharply increasing in the last 4 semesters of the ATSU undergraduate studies. One of the reasons is that students principally study the courses of the sectoral departments in the last semesters. Throughout the previous 2 years they gained knowledge and experience and, consequently, are adapted to the existing learning process. However, during the last semesters the degree of students’ motivation and participation in scientific research, various exchange programs and overall university activities is rather low.

Conclusion: The rule of scholarship provision should include additional criteria to encourage students to be actively involved in scientific research and extra-curricular activities.
