The Impact of Media Literacy on Education and its Teaching in Georgian Universities

Introduction and aim: Media literacy is a basic competency of the democratic society. Media freedom and access to information depends on the media literacy skills. Unequal level of media literacy causes unequal opportunities in Georgia. Nowadays media provides a lot communication possibilities and more information than ever before in Georgia. However, it controls our communication at the same time in terms of receiving and giving away the information, what kind of information and in what ways we get and give.

The main target of the research is to study the media literacy influences on university education and to conduct a survey to find out current situation in Georgia’s university education.

Development of literacy of teachers and students in the modern university Relevance of development of Media literacy of Teachers and Students of university locates in article, caused by change of a role of media in social life and education, transformation of a position of participants of educational process from critical consumers of information on active founders of media content.

Today the problem is not to find information but rather to catch true pieces among the huge flow of information. To separate facts and opinions from each other is the biggest challenge of our time. That process gave birth to the media literacy competence which is vital and necessary for 21st century human. It's about how person manages to get along with huge information and having relationship with different sources of information determines his success, his place in society, the benefits and everyday life.

Research methodology: Desk research, depth interviews, questionnaires.

Results and implications: Media literacy conditions will be found out in Georgian university education and the recommendation will be issued.

Conclusion: Media literacy influences will be explored in different countries’ university education.

The current situation will be surveyed in aspects of teaching media literacy in Georgian universities.

The recommendations will be issued based on the research results.
